It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Meghan Markle. I first noticed her in the USA drama Suits as Rachel Zane. Little did I know that Meghan would marry the prince and become the Duchess of Sussex just a few years later.
When the paparazzi snapped her and Harry together for the first time, all of the internet cried a collective “YAAASSSS!!!”
As a young black girl, the closest thing I ever got to seeing a black princess on screen was when Brandy played Cinderella in that one made for TV movie. Other than that, nothing. Nada. Even as a child I knew that I was different than Belle and Ariel, but I couldn’t quite figure it out.
We all know that Meghan Markle is a biracial woman, but she still represents the princess I wanted to be when I was a little girl. When Meghan stepped out hand in hand with Harry for the first time I felt seen. And when her beautiful black mother attended the royal wedding in DREADS, I felt proud.
So thank you Meghan, for reminding me that black girls can be princesses too.
Okay, I know we’re all on Baby Sussex watch right now, so I’ve compiled a quick round-up of my favorite Meghan style moments while we await the royal baby announcement!
Crisp white shirt and signature ripped jeans
I’ll never forget Meghan’s first official outing with Prince Harry. Ripped jeans, a crisp white shirt, and those stunning Sarah Flint flats. They both just looked SO happy, I couldn’t help but smile as I scrolled through the photos from the Invictus Games that year.
Meghan in Oscar De La Renta
A true fairytale princess! Meghan was absolutely glowing in this custom Oscar de la Renta gown. I want a version of this dress for myself but where would I wear it? Le sigh…
Street Style Meghan
Meghan’s off duty looks are always on point. She often rocks a pair of flattering heels and a good pair of jeans. I love how she layers basics under a wrap coat or jacket. It immediately pulls everything together into one cohesive look.
Did anyone else gasp when they saw Meghan step out in this stunning sequin gown by Roland Mouret? I DON’T EVEN LIKE SEQUINS and yet, Meghan makes me wanna go out and buy the first long sleeve sequin gown I can get my hands on. How Meghan, how?
Meghan and her Rothy’s
If you know me, you know how much I love my Rothy’s. These stylish, sustainable flats are so comfortable, I often forget that I’m wearing shoes when I have them on. And y’all… you can throw them in the WASH. Meghan knew exactly what was up when she swapped her heels for these pointy toe flats made from recycled water bottles.
